Sorry for the dumb question, but what is the difference between a custom block and custom content?

Not a dumb question at all. Took me a while to figure it out.

Custom block is a simple and totally flexible container. You can put anything you want in it subject to your skill at html, php etc
You can also opt to cut the header bar on it, and the surrounding border line.
If so the background colour on your board is the background colour - I guess you could change this via using an html table and setting bgcolor but I didn't do that yet.

You can also use the excellent (e$30) Custom Sidebar Blocks mod to add the same blocks to the forum pages - copy the code in your custom blocks on UP into the blocks you can make on Sideblocks. These can also b e viewed by permissions.

Custom Content blocks hold a link or list of links - each opens its own block when clicked.
Add new (or edit) Custom Content/ then Content Title will appear as a link in the Custom Content block.
The big box Content PHP/HTML: is for what appears when the link is clicked - this will be in its own box.
You can put plain text or use html incl. URL to an image or other stuff.
Also php so this would allow a members only, or usergroup only conditional to view a part or the whole of the content.
Note the Custom Content block ONLY holds these links to separate content boxes. To add any explanation text to the link you'd have to edit a template.
