Before I install the portal I would like to know if it is possible to skin the portal, for instance if i wanted the sides to have a different look than the middle. Is that possible.

A lot of the blocks use a generic skin function called general_block, so it isn't possible to customize the portal to use different looks for the sides than the middle without some heavy code and skin modification.
